Is hantavirus contagious?

Short answer: almost never. Most hantavirus strains spread only from rodents to people. The single exception is the Andes virus — found in southern Argentina and Chile — which has documented person-to-person transmission, but only with close prolonged contact.

How most strains actually spread

Sin Nombre, Hantaan, Puumala, Seoul, Dobrava, Bayou, and other hantaviruses spread exclusively via inhalation of aerosolized rodent excreta — typically when a person enters a dusty enclosed space (cabin, shed, attic) where infected rodents have been living. There is no documented human-to-human chain.

Why Andes virus is the exception

Andes virus appears to reach high titers in the upper respiratory tract late in illness, allowing aerosol-mediated transmission between people in close sustained contact — household members, healthcare workers without PPE, and apparently the confined population of an expedition cruise ship. The May 2026 MV Hondius cluster is the most recent documented human-chain outbreak.

Frequently asked

Is hantavirus contagious between people?

Most hantavirus strains are not transmitted person-to-person. The Andes virus, found in South America, is the only strain with documented human-to-human transmission, and only during close prolonged contact such as household members or healthcare workers without PPE.

Why is the Andes virus different?

Andes virus appears to replicate to high titers in the upper respiratory tract late in illness, allowing aerosol-based transmission between people in close, sustained contact. Other hantavirus strains do not reach the same upper-respiratory titers and have not been associated with human chains.

Can I catch hantavirus from sex or kissing?

There is no documented sexual transmission. Andes virus has been isolated from saliva, so prolonged close contact carries some risk; brief exposure or casual kissing has not been linked to documented transmission.

Can pets give me hantavirus?

Cats and dogs are not considered hantavirus reservoirs and do not transmit it to people. The risk comes from wild rodents — usually mice and rats — and their excreta.

If I was around someone with hantavirus, am I at risk?

If they have a non-Andes strain, your risk is essentially zero. If they have Andes virus and you had close prolonged contact (lived together, cared for them without PPE), monitor for symptoms for 45 days and contact your national public health authority for guidance.
