Methodology.

HantaTracker aggregates hantavirus case counts, deaths, and outbreak intelligence from primary public health authorities. Every case figure on the site links back to its upstream source.

• CDC NNDSS — weekly US notifiable disease counts via the data.cdc.gov Socrata API. Official authority for US case data.
• WHO Disease Outbreak News — international outbreak alerts via the WHO API.
• PAHO Epidemiological Alerts — quarterly updates for the Americas, especially South American Andes virus surveillance.
• ECDC TESSy — European Surveillance System data for Puumala and other European strains.
• National authorities — UKHSA, RKI (Germany), NICD (South Africa), KDCA (Korea), China CDC.
• ProMED — open infectious-disease intelligence list for early signals.
• GISAID — viral genomic sequence depository for strain identification.

Refresh cadence

• US weekly counts: every 6 hours from CDC NNDSS Socrata API
• WHO DON: every 30 minutes
• PAHO alerts: daily
• ProMED feed: every 5 minutes (when paid feed is enabled)
• National authority pages: scraped daily; manually validated weekly

Verification

Every outbreak record has at least one primary-source URL. Case counts are reconciled against WHO and PAHO figures when both are available. Discrepancies are flagged with their primary source on the relevant outbreak page.

Limitations

• Hantavirus is underdiagnosed; published case counts are floor estimates, not true incidence.
• Reporting lag varies by country (US: 1–2 weeks; some Latin American countries: 4+ weeks).
• Strain attribution depends on reference-lab capacity and may be revised.
• "Confirmed" vs "suspected" thresholds differ between national health authorities.

Editorial review

All clinical pages are reviewed by a credentialed clinician (see reviewers) before publication. Each clinical page shows a "last reviewed" date in its header. Pages older than 12 months are flagged for re-review.

Data license

Aggregated data is published under CC BY 4.0. You may use it commercially with attribution to HantaTracker and a link back to the source page on hantatracker.app.

Public API

Read-only JSON endpoints are available at /api/v1/cases, /api/v1/outbreaks, /api/v1/strains. CSV download and webhook access are part of the Pro tier.
